Jim Schwartz Could Replace Rod Marinelli As Cowboys Defensive Coordinator?

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Sunday night that Cowboys DC Rod Marinelli is expected to depart and accept the defensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Since then, reports have downplayed the idea and even Bucs HC Lovie Smith has said that they haven’t spoken to Marinelli.

However, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports also expects Marinelli to end up in Tampa Bay as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Interestingly enough, La Canfora suggests that Bills DC Jim Schwartz is someone to keep an eye on as a possible replacement to Marinelli for the Cowboys.

Reports from tonight have said that Schwartz will not be part of the Rex Ryan’s coaching staff, despite the fact that Ryan wanted to keep him on as their coordinator.

La Canfora mentions that Schwartz would be Dallas best available option if they were to lose Marinelli, who is a free agent, in the coming weeks.

There has been talk for several months now that Marinelli was likely headed to Tampa Bay to join his good friend, Lovie Smith.

Marinelli and Smith worked together during stops in Tampa Bay and Chicago. However, after the Bears fired Smith a few years ago, Marinelli left to become the defensive line coach of the Cowboys before being promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2014 season.

We’ll have more regarding Marinelli and Schwartz as the news is available.
