Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com writes that the Carolina Panthers could create over $1 million cap space by releasing QB Jimmy Clausen.
This would prevent the Panthers from having to pay Clausen’s $923,000 roster bonus that will be due on March 27. Yasinskas mentions that Carolina will need to create $9.6 million in cap room before the start of new league year on March 13th.
Clausen’s opportunities in Carolina have been limited to say the least. Last year he was inactive for the entire season as the Panthers had him sitting behind Derek Anderson as the team’s third-string quarterback. There’s still a chance that the Panthers could keep Clausen and cut Anderson but the fact that Ron Rivera and his staff chose to keep Clausen as the third-string quarterback throughout the season isn’t exactly a vote of confidence for him.
