Josh McCown Still Considered Browns’ Starting QB, CLE Impressed With Johnny Manziel

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media mentions that it’s his understanding that Josh McCown is still considered the team’s starting quarterback, even though they’re going with Johnny Manziel in Week 2.

Of course, McCown was not cleared medically following a concussion he sustained during the season-opener against the Jets, which is why Manziel is getting the start today.

Rapoport adds that the Browns have been impressed with Manziel and how he’s turned a corner, but the job still belong to McCown for now.

McCown’s concussions symptoms were considered minor on Sunday, but they elected to pull him from the game anyway. McCown displayed minor symptoms all week, but still couldn’t gain clearance.

The Browns will have Austin Davis as their backup on Sunday.

McCown, 36, signed a three-year, $14 million contract that included $6.25 million guaranteed with the Browns back in February. He’ll make a base salary of $2.25 million in 2015 to go along with $4.375 million and $3.625 million in the final two years of the deal.
