Julius Peppers An Option For The Packers?

 

According to Peter King of MMQB.com, former Bears DE Julius Peppers could be a free agent option for the Green Bay Packers.

• King mentions that Peppers is still a “solid run player” who could play opposite of Clay Matthews for the next year or two.
• King adds that other teams like the Seahawks will likely be in play for Peppers and DE DeMarcus Ware
• The Packers are reportedly interested in Ware as well, but he is widely expected to sign with the Broncos as soon as today.

The Chicago Bears elected to part ways with Peppers and take the $9.8 million in cap space and later signed Lamarr Houston to a long-term contract to replace him.

There is no question that the Packers need to find upgrades for their defense, but it’s hard to say what Peppers would be able to offer them at this point in this career. I’m sure they would have more interest in Ware if they could get a chance to meet with him, but that looks unlikely at this point in time.

Peppers, 34, did produce 46 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two forced fumbles an interception and a fumble returned for a touchdown in 2013. That’s decent production for most NFL players, however, it really comes down to what he’s going to offer them in future years and Ted Thompson has shown a tendency to go with younger players.

It’s an interesting idea nonetheless.
