Julius Peppers Hoping To Be Back With The Packers Next Year

The Green Bay Packers rarely look to the free agent market for big upgrades to their roster, GM Ted Thompson surprisingly decided to sign veteran Julius Peppers to a contract after the Bears cut him this past offseason.

Since then, Peppers has really helped to solidify Green Bay’s defensive front and put together a very respectable 2014 season.

However, the Packers will face a decision regarding the $9.5 million he’s scheduled to make next year.

On Friday, Peppers was asked if he wants to return for another season with the Packers. “Of course,” Peppers said, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Demovsky points out that Peppers will carry a $12 million cap figure next season and Green Bay could gain $7 million in cap space by releasing. Of course, the Packers could elect to renegotiate his contract at some point, which would reduce this figure to some more team-friendly.

Peppers mentioned that he’s taking it one day at a time and they will cross this bridge when they come to it.

Honestly, I’m taking this thing one day at a time, and at the end of the year we’ll re-evaluate where I’m at where, where the team is at, which direction they’re going, which direction I want to go,” Peppers said. “So as of right now, I’m having fun and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

Peppers, 34, has recorded 34 tackles, five sacks, two interceptions returned for touchdowns, two forced fumbles and three recoveries over the course of 12 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 8 outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.
