Just A Matter Of Time Before Bills Move On From GM Doug Whaley

Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News writes that the Bills should fire GM Doug Whaley now and be done with it.

Sullivan mentions that Whaley “has become a mute, emasculated figure” who is no longer allowed to speak on behalf of the organization. Beyond that, they’ve reduced his power and diminished his stature within the organization while handing over control of the operation to new HC Sean McDermott.

Earlier in the week, Jason La Canfora reported that he continues to hear that the Bills could be bringing in vice presidents and/or personnel figures with ties to McDermott at some point in the near future.

La Canfora added that there are already rumblings that the pairing of McDermott and Whaley “likely isn’t built to last.”

Sullivan mentions that several of Whaley’s favorites were allowed to depart this offseason while Tyrod Taylor was retained as the team’s starting quarterback, which implies that McDermott is calling the shots.

One theory tossed out by Sullivan is that the Bills are keeping Whaley around for the draft and to complete the word he’s been doing for the past year. However, he says that it would make more sense for the Bills to move on from him now as opposed to allowing him to have his finger prints on another draft class.

Whaley managed to survive the firing of HC Rex Ryan last season, despite the fact that some around the NFL reportedly felt as though he was just s responsible for the Bills’ struggles as Ryan was.

Whaley, 44, was hired as the Bills’ general manager back in 2013 after he spent 10 years working for the Steelers. Since taking the Bills’ job, Whaley’s teams have produced a record of 30-33 (47.6 percent) and have just one winning season and no playoff appearances over the course of four years.

We’ll have more regarding Whaley and his future with the Bills as the news is available.
