K Phil Dawson unlinkely to reach Contract Extension with Browns

According to Tony Grossi at ESPN Cleveland, the Cleveland Browns and Kicker Phil Dawson aren’t likely to reach a contract extension before Monday’s deadline. From the article:

Per the CBA, a third franchise designation for Dawson would merit a 40 percent pay hike over his $3.81 million contract this year, which would bring his 2013 salary to about $5.3 million! I can’t see the Browns paying that much for a kicker.

The article goes on to explain that with proper foresight, the Browns should have worked out a long-term deal with Dawson a couple of years ago. Dawson has expressed interest about playing his entire career in Cleveland, but that now appears to be in jeopardy as he will hit the open market after the 2012 season.
