It’s now official, the Oakland Raiders have released LB Kamerion Wimbley one-year after having totaling 16 sacks in the 2010 season. Wimbley now becomes the best available defensive player on the open market and should be able to secure a pretty sizable contract.
We have Wimbley listed as the #3 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
This move was clearly made in an attempt to clear some extra cap space and prevent themselves from paying Wimbley a ton of guaranteed money in the coming years as he had four years and $43.5 million remaining on his contract. Oakland met with his representation in an attempt to restructure his contract but no agreement was able to be reached.
Wimbley, 28, will become the best available defensive free agent on the market now that Mario Williams has signed with the Bills. In six years with the Browns and the Raiders, he has managed to tally 42.5 career sacks and will most likely be looking for a similar deal to the one that he had with the Raiders.
So far the Bears, Chiefs and Chargers have all been rumored to be interested in Wimbley, but more teams could be added to the mix so stay tuned.
