Kansas City Chiefs Rumors: Jamaal Charles, Matt Cassel, Offensive Coordinator

Jamaal Charles

Jamaal Charles mentioned yesterday that he was back in cleats again which is a sign that he’s begun participating in workouts after missing a very close to the entire 2011 season with a torn ACL.

Having a fully healed Jamaal Charles next season would be a huge addition for the team’s poor offense. You can never be certain of how a player will recover from a serious injury like a torn ACL but Charles is young enough to be back to his previous form next season.

Matt Cassel

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel told reporters that they plan to bring in additional talent at the quarterback position next year with the hope that it will push Matt Cassel to work harder.

“Who that [competition] is, I don’t know,” said Pioli. “Maybe it’s Kyle (Orton), maybe it’s another free agent, maybe it’s a draft choice. Very few people can perform at an extremely high level without competition.

Crennel previously mentioned that they would consider re-signing Kyle Orton but they could be in the market for other backup quarterback options like Jason Campbell.

Offensive Coordinator

Kansas City is said to be considering three candidates for their offensive coordinator vacancy. Quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn, Oakland Raiders OC Al Saunders and Dolphins OC Brian Daboll all have a shot at the job but Zorn has applied some leverage to the team’s decision by informing them that he plans on leaving if he’s not given the job. It’s hard to say who’s in the lead at this point but the team feels that it’s in their best interest to consider all available options.
