Last Season For Matt Cassel & The Chiefs?

Typically a 2-0 record is a positive sign that the team is playing up to expectations especially when you have struggled as much as the Kansas City Chiefs have in past years.

Despite their surprising start, Matt Cassel and the teams passing offense have looked awful thus far.  Cassel is 26 – 50 with  a touchdown and two interceptions which is not as bad as some of the other quarterbacks in the league. While these stats may not seem that bad as of now but when you consider that this is his second year with the Chiefs and how poorly he played last season, you begin to wonder whether signing him to a six-year $63 million deal was the right call.

Jason La Canfora chimes in on this situation by writing that, “Matt Cassel is running out of excuses for his poor play. They can run the ball, and they’re playing better on defense. Sure, there isn’t an abundance of playmakers, but they didn’t give Cassel his big contract to win despite him. I continue to think the Chiefs will strongly consider getting out of this contract in the offseason.

Cassel is set to make $4.75 million next season with a $7.5 million option bonus. The base salary is that bad but the option bonus makes his contract a liability. The success of the Chiefs season will depend on the play of Cassel and the teams passing offense. If the team ends up missing the playoffs they could look to go in another direction at the end of the season.
