It;s official the Buffalo Bills have in fact claimed Shawn Merriman off of waivers. Merriman will now have five days to report to the team. Pro Football Talk has confirmed that Merriman intends on joining the team.
Jay Glazer is reporting that two Bills sources have said that the team plans on claiming Shawn Merriman. Since the Bills have the top waiver priority they would be guaranteed to get him if the choose to.
Ken Murray of the Baltimore Sun has some quotes from Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. “[Merriman]’s a guy we talked about,” Harbaugh said. “[Ravens GM] Ozzie [Newsome] and I had a long discussion today. We’ll see if he gets through waivers.”
Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee writes that the San Francisco 49ers are not as interested in Merriman as the rumors may have suggested. He adds that the team is happy with LB Manny Lawson and LB Thaddeus Gibson whom they signed earlier in the week.
As of now there hasn’t been that much interest in Merriman which could have something to do with the question about his ability and the amount of money that he is due for the remainder of the 2010 season.
Adam Schefter mentioned that the Miami Dolphins remain an option to acquire Merriman. The Broncos, Texans and Redskins are other options for him.
Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com is reporting that Shawn Merriman will take a physical today. If cleared the San Diego Chargers will place him on waivers this afternoon making him the other big name to hit the waiver wire in the last day.
This should give teams an alternative to Randy Moss but it’s unclear whether there will be a lot of interest in Merriman because of his declining production during the last few years. As of now the Ravens, Broncos, Texans, 49ers and Redskins could all be options for him.
