Latest Regarding Free Agent CB Darrelle Revis

ESPN’s Rich Cimini spoke with a head coach, a team executive, a personnel director and a scout about free agent CB Darrelle Revis and consensus is that there’s no market for Revis because of a “significant decline” last season and concerns about his commitment.

Even so, Cimini’s sources did say they believe there’s a place for Revis in the NFL, assuming he’s willing to agree to a modest contract and convince a team that he’ll be willing to give it his all this year.

The head coach added that scheme fit would be important for him now that he’s lost a step.

He has lost a step with his age and some change-of-direction [ability] with his knee [surgery in 2012],” the coach said. “I still believe he can do an adequate job at corner. I’m not sure if he has the range for free safety. He used to be a physical tackler, but with age that’s gotten worse, so playing strong safety is out of the question. Let him play corner with some protection and he’ll do fine.”

The good news for Revis is that the NFL has cleared him of wrongdoing regarding the incident that took place in Pittsburgh earlier in the year, so he won’t be subject to discipline.

A big consideration for Revis is that the Jets owe him $6 million for the 2017 season whether he plays or not. With this in mind, there isn’t much of an incentive for him to play for a low-money deal, seeing has he’ll make more by doing nothing.

Cimini believes it’s unlikely Revis will sign for more than $6 million and may not catch on with a team until August.

Revis, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Jets back in 2007. He was entering the third year of his five-year, $70 million contract that includes $39 million guaranteed and was set to make a base salary of $13 million for the 2017 season when he was released by the Jets.

In 2016, Revis appeared in 15 games for the Jets and recorded 53 tackles, one interception and five pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 66 cornerback out of 112 qualifying players.
