Latest Regarding New NFL Drug Policy

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reports that the NFLPA will meet with league officials on Monday to continue negotiations regarding a new drug policy that could ultimately lead to reduced suspensions for players currently serving bans from the league.

According to Garafolo, this will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two parties, even though NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith will not be in attendance.

Garafolo mentions that it’s not a foregone conclusion that suspended players will have their bans lifted as part of the ongoing negotiations, but this is still something the NFLPA is working on.

The remaining issues that still need to be addressed include punishment for DUI arrests, issues related to marijuana and the status of several suspended players.

Tom Pelissero of USA Today reports that as of Sunday night, the league hasn’t changed their stance regarding the ability to punish players arrested for DUI’s before their cases work their way through the legal system.

The Players Association is obviously hoping to agree to third-party arbitration to handle appeals cases, which seems fairly reasonable.

Pelissero writes that if progress isn’t made on Monday, talks could be tabled until next year.

We’ll have more updates as the news is available.
