Lions Claim DE Kasim Edebali Off Waivers From Broncos, Cut DE George Johnson

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Lions have claimed DE Kasim Edebali off of waivers from the Broncos and cut DE George Johnson on Wednesday.

Edebali, 28, wound up signing on with the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College back in 2014. He managed to make the 53-man roster in all three of his seasons with the Saints and played out the final year of his three-year, $1,536,000 contract.

New Orleans declined to tender him a restricted offer this offseason and he later signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Broncos. Denver elected to waive Edebali on Tuesday.

In 2017, Edebali has appeared in nine games for the Broncos and recorded one tackle.

Johnson, 29, originally signed on with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers back in 2010. After a brief stint with the Vikings, the Lions signed Johnson to a contract back in April of 2014.

Detroit later traded him to the Buccaneers in return for a 2015 fifth-round pick that ultimately became Michael Burton. However, Tampa Bay elected to cut him loose coming out of the preseason last year.

Johnson wound up missing the entire 2016 season after he was placed on injured reserve with a fractured hip.

The Lions signed him to a contract a few weeks into the regular season and he’s been on and off of their roster this year.

In 2017, Johnson has appeared in four games for the Lions and recorded two tackles.
