Lions DE Cliff Avril Gets The Franchise Tag

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Detroit Lions have placed their franchise tag on DE Cliff Avril.

Detroit reportedly spent much of yesterday working on a long-term contract extension with Avril but ultimately chose to use the tag on him after a contract agreement wasn’t reached. Avril will make $10.6 million for the upcoming season, all of which is guaranteed, but has hinted that he may consider holding out if he’s tagged.

The Lions have other players to address like Stephen Tulloch and Jeff Backus as well as Calvin Johnson who is set to become a free agent next season so it will be interesting to see how they manage their cap space what deals there able to get finalized in the coming weeks.
