Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network rejects the notion that the Detroit Lions and DE Cliff Avril are close to a new deal.
Instead, La Canfora reports that multiple sources have informed him that the two sides are “are way off” regarding a long-term contract extension. La Cafora adds that they’ve had “no recent contact,” which suggests that this could carry on much longer than many anticipated.
According to La Canfora, Avril’s representation will most likely look to the recent deals signed by Tamba Hali and Calais Campbell, both of whom will make close to $10 million per season.

Albert Breer of NFL.com reports that the Detroit Lions and DE Cliff Avril are about $2 million-per-year apart regarding a long-term contract extension.
“The Lions have made several offers,” writes Breer. “Both nothing’s close.”
Avril has yet to sign his $10.605 million franchise tender in the hopes of securing a long-term deal with the team. Avril is said to be looking for at least $10 million per season in his next deal and half of the money guaranteed. Detroit is apparently offering a deal in the range of $8-9 million range annually.
Last year, Avril tallied a career high 11 sacks for the Lions defense. Detroit has the middle of the defensive line in place for the year’s to come, so ensuring that they have a solid pass rusher on the end makes sense, but obviously keeping Avril’s contract in proportion makes sense.
