Lions Get Good News Regarding Cliff Avril’s Injury

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Detroit Lions DE Cliff Avril’s MRI revealed “nothing serious.”

This is obviously great news, considering that Avril was helped off of the field on Sunday and was reportedly dealing with a back injury. The Lions will be on bye next weekend, so Avril will have plenty of time to ensure that he’s fully recovered before seeing game action.

The Lions used their franchise tag on Avril back in February, which has guaranteed him a $10.6 million base salary for this season. The two sides had been trying to reach a long-term agreement before the start of the regular season, but ultimately decided to shelve contract talks. Detroit has said that they would like to keep him for the long-term, but there’s no question that will pay close attention to his performance and health for the remainder of the year before committing a large sum of money to him.
