Lions Place RB Ameer Abdullah On Injured Reserve, Candidate To Return

Update:

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Lions RB Ameer Abdullah could be a candidate to return from injured reserve later on in the year, depending on how his rehab goes in the coming months.

The new injured reserve rules actually give the Lions some flexibility, as they can bring back any one player placed on I.R. after six weeks have elapsed.

Detroit would have to notify the NFL that they’re activating the player on the first day he returns to practice.

The Detroit Lions announced Wednesday that they’ve placed RB Ameer Abdullah on injured reserve.

This leaves Theo Riddick, Dwayne Washington and Zach Zenner as the team’s top-three option at running back for the time being.

Abdullah is dealing with a foot injury and this comes just a day after he visited with Dr. Robert Anderson, a well-known foot specialist.

Abdullah, 23, is a former second-round pick of the Lions back in 2015. He’s currently in the second year of his four-year, $4.156 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $573,915 for the 2016 season.

This year, Abdullah appeared in two games and ran for 101 yards on 18 carries (5.6 YPC) to go along with five receptions for 57 yards receiving and one touchdown for the Lions.
