Lions Placing Rookie RB Zach Zenner On Season-Ending I.R.

Lions HC Jim Caldwell announced Monday that rookie RB Zach Zenner will placed on season-ending injured reserve after he sustained multiple cracked ribs and partially collapsed lung during Sunday’s game.

Losing Zenner leaves the Lions with running backs Joique Bell, rookie Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick to go along with George Winn, who’s on their practice squad.

Zenner, 24, signed on with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State back in May. He was a preseason standout for the Lions, which led to him making the 53-man roster at the start of the regular season.

Zenner signed a three-year, $1.58 million contract that included a $5,000 signing bonus. He’ll make base salaries of $435,000 (2015), $525,000 (2016), and $615,000 (2017) over the remainder of the contract before becoming a restricted free agent in 2018.

His rookie season ends with him appearing in six games and rushing for 60 yards on 17 carries (3.5 YPC) to go along with two receptions for 11 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
