Lions Re-Sign TE Khari Lee To Practice Squad, Cut CB D’Joun Smith

The Detroit Lions have re-signed TE Khari Lee to their practice squad on Thursday and waived CB D’Joun Smith from the unit, according to Tim Twentyman.

The Lions’ practice squad now consists of:

  1. WR Jace Billingsley
  2. CB Alex Carter
  3. WR TJ Jones
  4. TE Khari Lee
  5. QB Jake Rudock
  6. G Brandon Thomas
  7. LB Steve Longa
  8. DB Charles Washington
  9. LB Brandon Chubb
  10. G Matt Rotherman

Lee, 24, wound up signing on the Texans as an undrafted free agent out of Bowie State back in May of last year. He was later traded to the Bears in return for a 2017 seventh-round pick. However, the Bears elected to place Lee on waivers and he was later claimed by the Lions.

Lee was in the second year of his three-year, $1.577 million rookie contract and set to make a base salary of $525,000 for the 2016 season when he was waived earlier in the week.

In 2016, Lee appeared in eight games for the Lions but has yet to record a statistic.

Smith, 22, was taken in the third round of last year’s NFL draft and signed a four-year, $3.314 million contract that included an $808,846 signing bonus.

Indianapolis placed Smith knee on short-term I.R. with a knee injury just a few weeks into the regular season. Unfortunately, the Colts waived Smith with an injury designation a few weeks ago and he later reverted to their injured reserve list.

The Colts waived Smith from injured reserve with a settlement back in September and he signed on to the Lions’ practice squad a few weeks later.

In 2015, Smith appeared in four games and recorded one tackle and a fumble recovery for the Colts.
