Lions Re-Sign Veteran CB Rashean Mathis To A Two-Year, $3.5M Deal

Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Detroit Lions have re-signed veteran CB Rashean Mathis to a two-year contract worth $3.5 million.

  • According to PFT, the agreement with pay Mathis $2 million for the 2015 season.

There was talk that the Lions could bring back Mathis at some point this offseason.

In fact, Lions GM Martin Mayhew previously mentioned that he would “love” to bring Mathis back next year.

We’d love to have Rashean back. I mean he’s really been a good leader for us,” Mayhew told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine, via DetroitLions.com. “He’s done a phenomenal job, I think, working with Darius Slay.

“He has a lot of position versatility, which we didn’t see much of this year because he was starting at outside corner the whole time, but he was a safety in college. He can play inside in the nickel. He’s a very versatile guy. He’s tough. He’s physical. We’d love to have him back.”

Mathis, 34, appeared in all 16 games for the Lions in 2014 and recorded 51 tackles, an interception returned for a touchdown, a forced fumble and nine pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the N0. 12 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players.
