Lions Release TE Tony Scheffler

The Detroit Lions announced they have released TE Tony Scheffler.

  • Detroit signed OT Barry Richardson to take his place on their active roster.

After sustaining a concussion in Week 5, HC Jim Schwartz hinted that Scheffler could be headed to injured reserve over a week ago. This and the rise of undrafted rookie Joseph Fauria appears to have left Scheffler expendable.

Scheffler, 30, hasn’t looked like the same player this season, which may have something to do with injuries. He’s had three dropped passes in just four games this season. There are a number of NFL teams in need of tight end help, so there’s at least a chance that Scheffler will have a new team in the coming weeks.
