Lions Release Veteran DE Wallace Gilberry From I.R. & Cut LB Steve Longa

The Detroit Lions announced Tuesday that they’ve released DE Wallace Gilberry injured reserve with a settlement and waived LB Steve Longa to make room for newly signed RB Justin Forsett.

  • The Lions also signed OT Brian Mihalik to their practice squad.

Gilberry, 31, wound up signing on with the Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama back in 2008. He lasted just a few months in New York before being signed off of their practice squad by the Chiefs.

Gilberry later caught on with the Buccaneers in 2012 before signing with the Bengals during the 2012 season. Cincinnati elected to bring him back on a three-year deal in 2013. The Lions signed him to a contract back in April before recently placing him on injured reserve.

In 2016, Gilberry has appeared in four games and recorded four tackles and no sacks for the Lions.

Longa, 22, wound up signing a three-year, $1.62 million contract with the Seahawks as an unrafted free agent out of Rutgers back in May. He lasted just a few months in Seattle before he was waived coming out of the preseason and later signed on to the Lions’ practice squad.

The Lions promoted to their active roster last week.

During his college career at Rutgers, Longa recorded 335 tackles, seven sacks, five forced fumbles, two recoveries and seven pass defenses over the course of three years.
