Lions Retaining Jim Caldwell As Head Coach

The Detroit Lions announced that they will retain Jim Caldwell as their head coach for the 2016 season.

Quinn said on Friday, “After spending a significant amount of time together, it is clear that our football philosophies are very similar,” per Tom Pelissero.

Not only did he lead the Lions to the playoffs his first season here, but when you look at how the players responded the second half of last season, under difficult circumstances, it’s clear to me that this team believes in him & responds positively to his leadership,” said Quinn.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Thursday that new Lions GM Bob Quinn has met with Caldwell on at least four different occasions.

Ian Rapoport also reported on Monday that “it doesn’t look good” for Caldwell remaining in Detroit, so this may come as a surprise to many people.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Quinn had his eye on Patriots OC Josh McDaniels to be the team’s next head coach, but he apparently remains satisfied with what he saw from Caldwell.

Caldwell, 60, is in the second year of his contract with the Lions and has led them to a a record of 18-14 (56.3 percent) to go along with one playoffs appearance.
