Lions Rework DT Akeem Spence’s Contract, Pick Up $500K Of Cap Room

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Lions and DT Akeem Spence have agreed to a reworked contract.

According to Yates, this move will reduce Spence’s 2018 base salary from $3.15 million to $2.575 million, but still gives him a chance to earn some of that money back.

The move creates $500,000 of cap space for the Lions.

Spence, 26, is a former sixth-round pick by the Buccaneers back in 2013. He finished his four-year, $2,644,424 rookie contract with Tampa Bay before signing a three-year, $10.5 million contract with the Lions last year.

In 2017, Spence appeared in all 16 games for the Lions and recorded 39 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus graded him as the No. 65 overall defensive lineman out of 122 qualifying players.
