Lions Rumors: Stephen Tulloch, Jahvid Best, Mikel Leshoure, Eric Wright

Stephen Tulloch

The Philadelphia Inquirer mentions that the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to target a middle linebacker in free agency rather than the draft.

The most obvious target for the Eagles is Stephen Tulloch of the Detroit Lions who has played in their Wide-9 defensive scheme while in Tennessee.

How [the Eagles] didn’t get this guy last year is beyond me,” said one NFL scout of Tulloch. “They may have to pay this time.

Detroit has said that they will try to keep him but that will be easier said than done considering that they still have to figure out what they’re going to do with DE Cliff Avril.

Eric Wright

The Detroit Free Press reports that the Lions are working on a new contract for CB Eric Wright.

The two sides met on Saturday to discuss a possible extension. Wright was largely disappointing in his first year with the Lions but the team really needs help at the position which could influence their decision to retain him. Still, Detroit has limited cap space so the real challenge will be to get a deal done that’s going to allow them to address other players and needs.

Jahvid Best

Lions GM Martin Mayhew mentioned that they’re “just waiting to get some final work” on RB Jahvid Best before he can be cleared to participate in offseason workouts.

We’ve gotten good reports on Jahvid,” Mayhew said, via MLive.com. “There’s not really a sense of urgency right now. The doctors want to be patient, so we understand that.”

Recent reports regarding Best’s future in the NFL have all been positive but until he’s actually passed these tests, nothing should be assumed.

Mikel Leshoure

Mayhew also discussed RB Mikel Leshoure‘s return by mentioning that it’s “hard to project” to when he’ll be available to start football related activities.

We really want to make sure we focus on what’s important and that’s having him ready for the season,” Mayhew said, via  MLive.com. “It’d be great if, the first OTA, he ran out there and is working with the first unit, but that’s not what’s really important.”

Leshoure’s returning from an Achilles tear but is expected to be available in the near future. Detroit will no doubt be expecting big things from the former 2nd-round draft pick.
