Lions Sign RB George Winn & LB Zaviar Gooden To PS, Cut Two

The Detroit Lions officially signed RB George Winn and LB Zaviar Gooden to their practice squad and released G Chase Farris and Isaac Fruechte from the unit.

The Lions’ practice squad now consists of:

  1. WR Jace Billingsley
  2. CB Alex Carter
  3. WR TJ Jones
  4. TE Brian Leonhardt
  5. QB Jake Rudock
  6. G Brandon Thomas
  7. DB Charles Washington
  8. RB George Winn
  9. LB Zaviar Gooden
  10. LB Steve Longa

Winn, 25, originally signed on with the Texans as an undrafted free agent out of Cincinnati back in 2013. He lasted just a few days with Houston before he was cut and later signed by the Patriots.

Since then, Winn has played for the Raiders, Steelers and Cowboys before the Lions signed him to a contract in July of 2014. The Lions brought him back on a one-year exclusive rights deal before cutting him coming out of the preseason.

Detroit later added Winn to their practice squad before being cut loose soon after.

Last year, Winn was active for seven games and totaled four rushing attempts for just a single yard and no touchdowns.

Gooden, 25, is a former third-round pick of the Titans back in 2013. He had two years remaining on his four-year, $2.681 million rookie contract that included a $506,016 signing bonus. He was set to make a base salary of $590,000 for the 2015 season.

Gooden, unfortunately, sustained a torn hamstring last August that led to him being placed on injured reserve at the start of the season. The Lions brought him back shortly after this year’s draft only to cut him loose coming out of the preseason.

In 2014, Gooden appeared in 15 games for the Titans and recorded 24 tackles and no sacks.
