Lions Situation At Running Back

The Detroit Lions are coming off of a pretty successful season that saw the teams passing attack live up to it’s potential and then some but their inability to generate a consistent running game leaves them searching for answers during the offseason.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press tweets that the Lions will most likely pass on the some of the big named free agents despite the question marks that surround their backfield.

Last week we posted a report that mentioned that some within the Lions organization are concerned that Jahvid Best may never play football again. Rookie RB Mikel Leshoure suffered a torn Achilles during the preseason so it’s hard to say how he’ll recover for next season.

Brikett mentions that the team plans to re-sign DE Cliff Avril which will require a long-term contract along with a huge salary. If this ends up being the case, Brikett sees Kevin Smith as a possibility.

It’s worth noting that the Lions interviewed Boise State RB Doug Martin during the week leading up to the Senior Bowl so there’s a chance that they could use another draft pick on the position this year.
