Lions To Start Negotiations With DT Ndamukong Suh Once He Hires An Agent

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network tweets that the Lions plan on negotiating a long-term extension with DT Ndamukong Suh as soon as he hires an agent.

Suh fired his agent Roosevelt Barnes a few weeks ago before any talks with the Lions got started regarding a new contract. There has been talk that Suh could end up signing with Jay-Z at some point in the near future.

Suh, 27, still has two years remaining on his current contract, but with the Lions projected to be over the salary cap next year, so they will obviously need to free up some cap space in order to retain some of their free agents while filling other roster holes.

As of now, Suh is projected to count $22.4 million against the team’s 2014 cap, according to Overthecap.com, which is a truly incredible figure for someone who doesn’t play quarterback. Detroit could easily get that number down to something more manageable with a contract extension that prorates guaranteed money over the course of multiple years.

Suh should have no trouble besting Geno Atkins six-year deal worth $56.4 million contract that included $31 million guaranteed seeing as he comes from a position of leverage.

Trading Suh An Option?

Interestingly enough, Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press proposed the idea of the Lions trading Suh for draft picks so that they didn’t have as much money invested in their top three players.

While this is a way for them to get in better financial standing in the coming years, it seems highly unlikely that the Lions would consider making such a move.
