Lions Don’t Have An Agreement In Place With Rugby Star Jarryd Hayne, Despite Report

Update:

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Lions may not be signing Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne to a contract after all.

According to Birkett, the announcement scheduled for Monday is not be related to his contract, and instead designed to talk about the process of trying to secure an opportunity in the NFL.

Birkett adds that, as of now, no contract has been signed or agreed to.

Matt Logue of the Daily Telegraph reports that Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne will announce next week that he has signed with the Detroit Lions.

Hayne left his Australian rugby team last October to pursue an NFL career. Since then, he’s tried out for the Seahawks, 49ers, and the Lions, so he was clearly on their radar.

Hayne, 27, is likely to be either a running back or a fullback in the NFL, but he’ll have to secure a roster spot in training camp this summer.

Either way, it’s an intriguing move for the Lions.
