Lions Trying To Sign Cliff Avril To Long Term Deal

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press writes that the Lions have been talking with DE Cliff Avril‘s agent to try and get a long-term deal done.

We’ve had a lot of discussions with his agent” said Lions President Tom Lewand “We’ve been very aggressive in trying to get him done“.

Avril had been pretty vocal about his discontent with the Lions after placing their franchise tag on him, even though he’ll now make $10.6 million for the 2012 season. He even threatened to hold out if a long-term deal was not in place before the start of training camp.

Since then he’s backed away from these comments and appears to be working with the team to resolve the situation.

It’s safe to say that Avril and DT Ndamukong Suh have benefited from each others success as they helped create one of the more dominant defensive lines in the NFL which Avril set career highs last year and led the Lions with 11 sacks and 6 forced fumbles.
