Lions WR Calvin Johnson Expects To Start Negotiating Long-term Deal Soon

Lions WR Calvin Johnson, 26, is coming off of an unbelievable season in which he tallied over 1600 yards receiving to go along with 16 touchdowns. Johnson will be entering the final year of his rookie contract so the idea of re-signing with the Lions came up during an appearance on “Rome is Burning.”

Yeah, definitely, we’re going to see here — soon,” Johnson told Jim Rome, via the Detroit News. “We’re going to have some talks soon, and hopefully get things rolling.”

Lions GM Martin Mayhew discussed the idea earlier in the month.

I think we have an opportunity to work on that this offseason,” Mayhew told reporters this month. “I don’t think it’s something that absolutely has to be done, but we have an opportunity to work on it.”

Mayhew may not feel as though it’s the most pressing issue as we already posted that DE Cliff Avril is said be the team’s top priority during the offseason but it should certainly be near the top of their list. Johnson will make $14 million next season and that price will only increase as he’s proven to be one of the game best offensive weapons.
