“Market Correction” Coming For The Quarterback Position?

Peter King of MMQB.com has a feeling that we could be headed for a “quarterback mini-revolution” next year.

“I just have this feeling we’re headed for a quarterback mini-revolution in 2015,” King writes. “It’s part RG3-rebelliousness, part dissatisfaction with the status quo of the Cutler/Newton/Kaepernick crowd, part not being sold on Marcus Mariota, part being deathly afraid in the current domestic violence climate of Jameis Winston—who is in a Florida State disciplinary hearing this week for suspicion of sexually assaulting a fellow FSU student—and part… well, just the feeling that we might be headed for a bit of a market correction in how the position is played.”

Despite all the talk that mobile quarterbacks were going to be the future, people who spoke to King indicated that the NFL could be shifting back towards favoring pocket quarterbacks.

Let me tell you this,’’ Gil Brandt of NFL.com. “I think we’re slowly, slowly going back to the age of pocket quarterbacks.”

Even with the rise of players like Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton and Russell Wilson, who could all make big plays with their legs and had shown some promise passing the ball, there was always a concern regarding the long-term durability of running quarterbacks.

“What we’re seeing this year is the incredible erosion of the running quarterback,’’ said ESPN’s Bill Polian.

This year’s draft class offers some intriguing quarterback prospects like Mariota, Winston, Connor Cook and Brett Hundley, but it appears as though the consensus belief if that none of them are can’t-miss talents.

King goes on to lay out more reasons why the league could be shifting back to a pocket quarterback preference, so I highly recommend reading his article if you’re interested.
