Marshawn Lynch Unlikely To Finish Out His Current Deal With The Seahawks?

Mike Sando of ESPN.com has a great article up right now that takes a look at the Seahawks recent decision to draft Texas A&M RB Christine Michael in the second-round, and how it could impact the team’s roster moving forward.

According to Sando, RB Marshawn Lynch has $5.5 million base salary along with a $2 million roster bonus coming his way in 2015. He’ll also count $9 million against Seattle’s salary cap that season.

While this isn’t an absurd amount of money, it’s worth considering that Lynch will be 29-years-old by then. He’s with back spasms in recent years, so an additional two years of wear and tear to his body could end up being a serious concern.

Sando is willing to bet against Lynch playing out the final year of contract, so the team will need to have a potential replacement prepared to takeover by then. The pairing of Michael and second-year RB Robert Turbin should be able to handle the ground attack, which could make Lynch expendable at that price.

Another important consideration brought up by Sando is that the Seahawks will have to either work out extensions for CB Richard Sherman and S Earl Thomas or allow them to depart during free agency. On top of that, players like QB Russell Wilson, DE Bruce Irvin, LB Bobby Wagner and OT Russell Okung will all be entering the final year of their contracts, so it’s going to be important for them to ensure that they have plenty of cap space to keep their young nucleolus intact.

A lot can change in two years, so this is just an early look at the Seahawks future situation. Still, it’s at least an interesting idea to consider.

  1. Why don’t you run off to N.Y. and join the other drama queens. I am sick to death of idiots trying to stir the pot and make drama out of nothing. EVERY team, unless they are idiots, need to be constantly putting people in place to replace vets that may retire or go down with an injury. That’s obvious to a ten year old child. Especially when you are in the middle of making a dynasty. Thats the basis of all dynasties. It’s the quality back-ups that make a team great year after year. So why try to make a stupid drama story out of a franchise just making smart moves, especially a story that’s 2 more years in the making. Isn’t there enough real stories right now? Trying to build drama out of a NON-story is tabloid stuff and beneath a true sports reporter!!!! UNLESS your from N.Y.

    • The basis for the article comes from ESPN’s NFC West blogger Mike Sando. I didn’t misconstrue any of the information included in his article, so it’s not as though I was just making stuff up out of thin air.

The whole basis of what we do is to try to shed some light on what’s to come in the NFL. Seattle obviously walked away with a very good draft class and has now taken a RB in back-to-back years, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to wonder what this could mean for one of the game’s best RBs.

I’ll admit that this is a little further down the road than most of topics that we cover, but it was a really well article and a pretty interesting topic at that.

I’m not taking a shot at Seattle or even suggesting that Lynch is washed up. Thanks for the comment.

      • I just want to say that I really appreciate the articles that NFLTR puts
out, and I also admire the way that they gently put idiots like
“winterhawker” in their place by countering all of their bogus
accusations. I found this article insightful and relevant.

        • Luke,

Your comment made my day. This is one of the most gratifying comments that I’ve seen posted on the site and just wanted to thank you personally for your support.

          Best,
          Nate
