Matt Rhule Staying At Baylor, Despite Jets’ Interest

According to Ian Rapoport, Baylor HC Matt Rhule sent a text message to his staff indicating he’s staying in school. Rapoport adds that this essentially means that Rhule will not be the next head coach of the Jets.

Manish Mehta reports that the Jets were not satisfied with the quality of staff Rhule could put together if he was given the job. According to Mehta, the Jets wanted Rhule to hire assistants that they preferred rather than allow Rhule to hire his full staff.

The list of reported interviews for the Jets includes:

  1. Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy
  2. Former Dolphins HC Adam Gase
  3. Former Packers HC Mike McCarthy
  4. Cowboys passing game coordinator/DBs coach Kris Richard
  5. Buccaneers OC Todd Monken
  6. Former Lions & Colts HC Jim Caldwell
  7. USC OC Kliff Kingsbury (Hired by Cardinals)
  8. Baylor HC Matt Rhule (Staying at Baylor)

The Colts interviewed Rhule last year for their head-coaching position.

Rhule, 43, began his coaching career at Albright as a linebackers coach back in 1998. He worked for a number os schools including Buffalo, Western Carolina, UCLA and Temple before being hired by the Giants as an assistant offensive line coach for the 2012 season.

Rhule returned to Temple as their head coach in 2013 and spent four years in the position before being hired as new head coach at Baylor in 2017.

During time has a head coach, Rhule’s teams at Temple and Baylor produced a record of 36-40 (47.36 percent) and three bowl appearances.
