Matthew Stafford’s Future With Lions “Very Much In Doubt”

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Matthew Stafford‘s future beyond 2015 with the Lions is “very much in doubt,” as he understands the situation.

  • Jason La Canfora mentions that the next Lions’ GM will need to make a decision regarding Stafford, who’s contract is trade-able in 2016 from a cap perspective.
  • La Canfora believes there would be several suitors if he was available.
  • Adam Caplan points out that although Stafford is signed through 2017, his base salaries are not guaranteed.

This comes after the news that the Lions owners have begun cleaning house today by firing GM Martin Mayhew and president Tom Lewand.

The idea of Stafford possibly moving on down the road has come in recent months, as Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News previously suggested that he could eventually land in Dallas, depending on what happens over the next few years.

However, that was just a suggestion and isn’t based on a report.

Stafford, 27, has come under a great deal of criticism this year after the Lions got off to a disappointing 1-7 start to the season.

He has three years remaining on his five-year, $76.5 million contract that included $41.5 million guaranteed. Stafford will make base salaries of $9.5 million (2015), $17 million (2016), and $16.5 million (2017) over the remainder of the agreement.

This season, Stafford has thrown for 2,083 yards while completing 64.5 percent of his passes to go along with 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions over the course of six games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the worst quarterback out of 35 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Stafford’s future with the team as the news is available.
