Michael Sam Has Spoken To A Half-Dozen Teams Since Being Released

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, citing a league source, reports that former Rams seventh-round pick DE/OLB Michael Sam has been in contact with close to a half-dozen NFL teams since he was released by the Cowboys a few weeks ago.

  • Schefter adds that the interested clubs are taking a “wait-and-see approach” with Sam for now.

It could take an injury for someone to sign him to their practice squad, but it appears as though he is someone being monitored as a potential option should they need some help at edge-rusher.

This news comes in contrast to a report from Mike Freeman of the Bleacher Report, who mentioned that no team is interested in signing Sam to a contract.

Freeman, citing data from Cyd Zeigler of Outsports.com, writes: Sam “should have stayed in the closet because the data shows that bigotry is playing a part in him not making the NFL.

Sam, 24, was taken in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams, but he was unfortunately unable to make the final 53-man roster coming out of the preseason. The Cowboys later added him to their practice squad, but he lasted just a few months with them.

Sam recorded three sacks during the preseason, and said that he’s confident he can play in the NFL. During his four years at Missouri, Sam recorded 111 tackles, 32.5 sacks, two interceptions, and five forced fumbles.

If Sam isn’t signed to a team’s practice squad in the next few weeks, he could be signed to a future/reserve contract towards the end of December.
