Michael Sam Left Montreal Alouettes Because He Sensed He Was Going To Be Cut?

According to Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette, former Rams seventh-round pick Michael Sam decided to leave the Montreal Alouettes because he sensed he wasn’t going to make the team.

The latest theory concerning Sam’s departure was that he simply wasn’t good enough to make the roster, sensed this and left to save himself and the organization embarrassment,” Zurkowsky writes. “This particular scenario is gaining steam throughout the Als dressing room and, for that matter, the CFL.

The Alouettes ultimately suspended Sam, which ensures that they own his rights if he decides to return to the team.

Alouettes GM Jim Popp mentioned previously that he was surprised by Sam’s decision to leave the team for personal reasons.

“He wanted to go home, and that’s what he did,” Popp said, via ESPN.com. “I don’t know why. When a guy wants to go home, they go home. He had some personal things to take care of. I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns. I’m surprised he left. I was very surprised. If he doesn’t come back, I would think football’s over for him.

Sam participated in this year’s NFL Veteran Combine, but there has been no reported interest in him before the Alouettes signed him to a one-year contract. During his workout at the veteran Combine, Sam ran unofficial forty times of 5.10 and 5.07.

Sam, 25, is a former seventh-round pick of the Rams back in 2014. He was unable to make the final 53-man roster coming out of the preseason, but later signed to the Cowboys’ practice squad.

During three preseason games with the Rams, Sam recorded 11 tackles and three sacks.
