Raiders & Michigan Officials Meeting With Jim Harbaugh This Weekend

Update:

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that officials from the Oakland Raiders will also speak with 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh about becoming their new head coach.

  • Rapoport also confirms that Michigan athletic director Jim Hackett and other officials are in the Bay Area to meet with Harbaugh.
  • According to Rapoport, both sides will be ready to get Harbaugh under contract as soon as the regular season has concluded.
  • Rapoport adds that the Raiders have been “extremely cautious” about speaking to Harbaugh, as not to tamper with another team’s head coach.

Jason Cole points out that Harbaugh can’t resign and then take another NFL job, which means he would only do so if he was going to accept a college job.

Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports reports that University of Michigan brass and their search firm will be in San Francisco this weekend as part of their pursuit of 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh.

For what it’s worth, Joe Pequeno of CBS5 in Arizona is also reporting that Michigan Officials are in San Francisco to meet with Harbaugh.

According to Pequeno’s sources, the 49ers and Michigan have already worked out a deal for him to become the Wolverine’s next head coach. However, Pequeno adds that nothing is official as of now, but an announcement could come on Tuesday.

Jay Glazer reported last weekend that a 49ers’ decision regarding Harbaugh is expected to come down quickly, and possibly 24-48 hours after the regular season ends.

Assuming Glazer’s timeline is accurate, the 49ers could have a hard time working out a trade with an NFL team like the Raiders.

It’s been clear for quite some time that Harbaugh will not be back with the 49ers next season, but it wasn’t until recently that reports began to indicate that Michigan had a legitimate shot of landing him as their next head coach.

Michigan has reportedly offered Harbaugh a six-year contract worth close to $49 million, which would make him the highest paid college head coach.

We’ll have more updates regarding Harbaugh and Michigan as the news is available.
