Mike McCarthy Undecided About Coaching Next Year

Rob Demovsky of ESPN spoke with former Packers HC Mike McCarthy before he left town for the weekend and McCarthy said he planned to “lay low and try to finish this professional chapter on the high road.”

A source close to McCarthy tells Demovsky that he was pondering whether to pursue a head-coaching job this offseason or take the year off and remain in Green Bay, where his family has deep roots.

A few days ago, Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that McCarthy’s preference is to coach in 2019 and some teams are already showing interest in him.

Wood added that it would not be surprising if the Browns are among the interested teams, given McCarthy’s ties to the front office and that QB Baker Mayfield would be a good fit in his offensive system.

While McCarthy may prefer to coach next year, Wood admits that there’s still no guarantee at this time.

There could be as many as 6-7 coaching jobs available and with a limited crop of head-coaching candidates, it would not be surprising to see McCarthy back on the sideline next year.

McCarthy, 55, began his NFL coaching career with the Chiefs back in 1993 as an offensive quality control coordinator. He bounced around with the Packers, Saints and 49ers before the Packers hired him as their head coach in 2006.

The Packers made the decision to move on from McCarthy following their disappointing loss to the Cardinals.

During his 13-year tenure in Green Bay, McCarthy has led the Packers to a record of 125-77-2 (61.8 percent), which includes nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title in 2010.
