Browns Fire Mike Pettine & GM Ray Farmer

Update:

Browns owner Jimmy Haslem announced that they’ve fired HC Mike Pettine and GM Ray Farmer on Sunday.

We greatly appreciate Ray and Mike’s dedication and hard work while with the Cleveland Browns,” Haslam said. “We’ve made this decision because we don’t believe our football team is positioned well for the future. We are all disappointed with where we are and I take full responsibility. We will approach the search for our next football coach and executives to lead our football operations with a clear vision regarding what we need to do to build a successful organization. We will be methodical in looking for strong, smart leaders with high character who are relentlessly driven to improve our football team, willing to look at every resource possible to improve, and who embrace collaboration to ultimately make the best decisions for the Cleveland Browns. We are fully committed to bringing our fans the winning organization they so clearly deserve.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Browns HC Mike Pettine is scheduled to meet with owner Jimmy Haslam at 7 pm ET tonight and is expected to be relieved of his duties.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported earlier in the day that the Browns were prepared to fire Pettine with GM Ray Farmer likely being done with the team as well.

According to Rapoport, Haslam has already begun laying the groundwork for the move while doing work on potential candidates and seeing who will be available to them in the coming days.

It’s early in the process, but Lions DC Teryl Austin, Bears OC Adam Gase, Jaguars assistant coach Doug Marrone and former Eagles HC Chip Kelly have all come up as speculative options for the Browns.

Since taking over as the Browns’ head coach in 2014, Pettine has led the team to a record of 10-21 (32.3 percent).

Farmer’s time in Cleveland will likely be remembered for draft failures and the texting incident that led to him being suspended at the start of the season.
