Dolphins The “Team To Beat” For WR Mike Wallace?

Update:

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Dolphins are the “team to beat” in regards to signing free agent WR Mike Wallace.

Jeff Darlington reports that that “if all goes as planned” for the Dolphins next week, they’ll have a receiving corps that consists of Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Davone Bess.

Darlington adds that the Dolphins “covet” Wallace and believe he’ll secure larger contracts that than the ones signed by Vincent Jackson and Dwayne Bowe.

Interestingly enough, Darlington adds that Dolphins expect to see the Minnesota Vikings involved in the bidding for Wallace. Peter King suggested that the Titans could also be in the mix for Wallace, via Pro Football Talk.

We have Wallace listed as the No. 1 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald writes that the recent five-year, $56 million contract extension handed out to WR Dwayne Bowe on Monday will be the “starting point” for free agent Mike Wallace.

Salguero adds that some team is bound to pay Wallace a top 5 contract given that his sought-after skill set. Salguero emphasizes that the Miami Dolphins “will chase Mike Wallace in free agency” and have plenty of cap space to get a deal done.

The Dolphins and Patriots are reportedly close to reaching an agreements with Brian Hartline and Wes Welker respectively, so what appeared to be a decent wide receiver free agent class is now shaping up to be pretty limited.

The receiver market would consist of Greg Jennings, Danny Amendola and Wallace as the most notable options. Clearly, this would be a great situation for these three players, considering that there was some question as to whether or not they would be able to command huge contracts with a number of options available.
