Peter Schrager is hearing that there’s mutual interest between the 49ers and free agent LB Malcolm Smith.

Reports from earlier mentioned that the Raiders plan to allow Smith to depart in free agency, so it’s likely he’ll be playing elsewhere in 2017.

The 49ers have been very active out of the gate in regards to signing free agents and it appears as though another move could be on the horizon.

Smith, 27, is a former seventh-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2011. He played out his rookie contract with the Seahawks and was named Super Bowl MVP a few years ago before signing a two-year deal with the Raiders in 2015.

In 2016, Smith appeared in 15 games for the Raiders and recorded 103 tackles, one interceptions, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 67 linebacker out of 87 qualifying players.
