Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported during an appearance on Good Morning Football that there is interest is mutual between the Jets and free agent QB Jay Cutler.
“The Jets do have some interest in Jay Cutler. And I’m told he has interest in them as well,” Rapoport said. “At this point it’s really a matter of fit. There are a couple questions the Jets have to ask themselves: Is Jay Cutler the kind of quarterback that you want in your quarterback room? They have a couple young guys who they’d like to bring along — Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. Jay Cutler does not always have the greatest reputation for dealing with teammates, whether or not that is reality we’re not exactly sure. But do you want to bring Jay Cutler into your quarterback room? That’s one question. It is pretty obvious, though, he is the best veteran quarterback option out there. I would expect some sort of contact between Cutler and the Jets some point soon.”
As soon as Cutler was officially released on Thursday, speculation began to surface that the Jets could be a landing spot for hi.
The Jets were reportedly in the market for Brian Hoyer before he elected to sign with the 49ers earlier in the day. The Bears are in great position to land Mike Glennon and Tyrod Taylor agreed to a restructured deal with the Bills, so it appears as though quarterback options are drying up for New York.
Cutler is, arguably, the best available options at the quarterback position right now, which speaks to how limited the pool of free agents is at the position.
Cutler, 33, is a former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2006. He spent three years in Denver before he was traded to the Bears in 2009. He was in the fourth year of his seven-year, $126.7 million contract that included $54 million guaranteed when the Bears cut him loose at the start of the 2017 league year.
In 2016, Cutler appeared in five games and throw for 1,059 yards while completing 59.1 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and five interceptions.
We’ll have more regarding the Jets and Cutler as the news is available.
