New Contract For 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick May Not Come Until June

According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, contract talks between the 49ers and QB Colin Kaepernick could begin to heat up at the start of June when they will receiveĀ $6.6 million in cap space following the release of CB Carlos Rogers.

As things stand right now, San Francisco has justĀ $3.726 million to work with, which isn’t much when you consider that they will need to sign their 2014 draft class in the next few months.

Maiocco mentions that the 49ers could offer a similar contract to the one Ravens QB Joe Flacco received last year —Ā Ā six-year, $120.6 million total, a $29 million signing bonus and $51 million guaranteed — as it offered a reasonable first year cap figure ofĀ $6.8 million.

Kaepernick, 26, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will make $973,766Ā for the 2014 season. Given how successful he’s been since taking over forĀ Alex SmithĀ during the 2012 season, and the fact that he’s still young, it really wouldn’t be surprising to see him come close to Flacco’s deal, even if he ultimately falls a bit short.
