NFC Notes: 49ers, Bears, Lions, Rams

49ers

  • Tom Pelissero reports that 49ers G Joshua Garnett will undergo scans on Monday to figure out the source of swelling and pain in his injured knee.
  • However, Pelissero adds that there’s optimism right now that Garnett’s knee injury is not significant.

Bears

John Mullin of CSN Chicago mentioned during an interview with Pro Football Talk Monday morning that he wouldn’t be stunned to see first-round QB Mitch Trubisky beat out Mike Glennon for the job this preseason, even though Glennon is the favorite to open the year as the starter.

“It would not stun me to have this kid really flash in preseason and win the job outright,” Mullin said of Trubisky. “I don’t think it’s going to happen but it wouldn’t stun me. You see them alongside each other, you see them trading off the reps and so forth. Trubisky’s got the ‘it’ factor. I’ve seen a lot of quarterbacks and this kid’s got something to him. You don’t see that with Glennon. This kid, when he’s on the field, kind of lights it up a little bit.

Lions

Lions RB Ameer Abdullah said he feels like he’s “turned the corner” in regards to the injury issues he’s dealt with since entering the NFL.

“I feel good,” Abdullah said, per Michael Rothstein of ESPN. “I was telling Coach I feel like I’ve turned the corner. I don’t really think about it anymore. I’m out there competing at a high level, back to my old self, and I’m happy with the progression I’ve made.

“I feel great, man. I feel great,” Abdullah added. “It’s a good feeling when you know you’ve done everything you could, you know, in the offseason, turn over every stone just to get back to be ready for your team.”

  • The Lions announced Monday that they’ve activated DE Armonty Bryant and G Brandon Thomas from active-physically unable to perform

Rams

Rams HC Sean McVay referred to RB Todd Gurley as one of the standout players for them during the offseason program and added that they’re “big things” from Gurley this year.

“He did a great job of getting it out into the open field,” McVay said, via ESPN.com “and there was a couple where he’s reading it one gap at a time on some of the schemes we have, and you can feel his speed once he gets to the corner. He’s a guy that has been motivated and has been a standout throughout the offseason program, and it’s been the same throughout camp. We’re expecting big things from Todd.
