NFC Notes: 49ers, Eagles, Vikings

49ers

On Friday, the 49ers held a press conference to announce the new five-year, $137.5 million extension for QB Jimmy Garoppolo.

49ers GM John Lynch mentioned that both parties really wanted to get a deal done and they didn’t see any reason to wait.

A lot of people kept saying, ‘It’s a difficult process; it’s complex,’” Lynch said, via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “What I tried to do is keep pushing the button: Hey, he wants to be here; we want him here. Let’s get it done. Why wait?

“. . . A lot of people are going to have a lot of ideas on what could have happened. What I’m concerned about is he’s right here, and he’s signed for five years, and I love that. It took a lot of team work to get that done, and I’m really proud that we did.”

Garoppolo said that he’s excited they were able to get this deal done so quickly.

“I wasn’t careful [about his choice of words]; I knew I wanted to be here,” said Garoppolo. “I knew it was just a matter of getting everything figured out. We did that fairly quickly this offseason. I’m excited about it and thankful that it got done so fast. It’s an exciting time right now.”

Eagles

Eagles LS Rick Lovato mentioned during an appearance on 620 WDAE in Tampa that they specifically didn’t run the “Philly Special” play during their walkthrough at U.S. Bank Stadium.

We had run that play during a walk-through like two weeks ago,” Lovato said, via Pro Football Talk.

According to Lovato, their walk-through was a “complete fake” and they didn’t want to show anything in case there were people spying on them.

“I believe our whole walk-through was just a complete fake walk-through,” Lovato said. “We did it at the stadium. There were certain people walking around. . . . I believe I overheard someone say a lot of the plays we were running weren’t even in the playbook for the Super Bowl.”

Lovato explained that their gameplan had already been set and in place for two weeks.

“We already had our game plan set all week for the last two weeks,” Lovato said. “We had two weeks to prepare for that game. A measly walk-through the day before the game, we weren’t going to show anything to anyone, especially being at the stadium.

Vikings

Vikings new OC John DeFilippo told reporters on Friday that he will have “some say” in the team’s quarterback situation this offseason.

“I’m going to have some say and I’m going to have as much say as they want me to,” DeFilippo said, per Courtney Cronin. “I’m a team player. Whatever they ask me to do in terms of researching the players we’re going to research, I’m going to leave no stone unturned. It’s going to be a collaborative effort, something we all agree on. I’ve been through this situation before, searching for Derek Carr and Carson Wentz. So, I’ve had some experience in this situation in trying to find your quarterback to lead your football team. So as much or as little input as they want, I’ll give them. But I know whatever information I give them will be very educated and very researched.”
