NFC Notes: Bears, Packers, Panthers

Bears

Bears OC Dowell Loggains said he expects a big season out of second-year RB Jordan Howard in 2017.

That’s invaluable for a young kid who is hungry and excited,” said Loggains of Howard making the Pro Bowl and being around some of the best in the game. “He hasn’t scratched the surface of what he can be (eventually). … He’s a hard-working kid. He’s quiet. He’s humble. You want success for guys like that.”

Packers

Chargers CB Casey Hayward tells Tyler Dunne of Bleacher Report that he was stunned the Packers didn’t offer him a contract as a free agent last year.

I’m like ‘Wow. They really think I’m a s–tty player,’” Hayward said. “They didn’t offer me at all. I felt like I was the best player at the position when I was there. It kind of was like, ‘Dang.’ I’m glad now I’m a L.A. Charger. I got to show my true talents. Got to travel with No. 1s and show people what I can do. I’m glad I’m not there with those guys. I’m glad I’m here.

“I’m going to come out here each year and try to prove those guys wrong, again, that they should’ve signed me.”

Panthers

Panthers HC Ron Rivera said he does not think his job is in jeopardy, despite not expecting the firing of former GM Dave Gettleman.

No,” said Rivera about his job being on the line, via the Charlotte Observer. “But it’s football. You’ve got to be productive. I’ve got to get us back on track…. I’m going to work hard to do that, as is our coaching staff.

Rivera went on to praise Gettleman but did not comment about whether he agreed or disagreed with his release.

The decision was made, and that’s what we’re going to do…. The biggest thing is Dave did a great job for us. He helped me to grow as a coach, he helped to put the final pieces of the puzzle together and he helped us get to the Super Bowl.”

When asked why Gettleman was fired, Rivera said: “I’m the wrong person to ask.”
