NFC Notes: Bears, Packers, Saints

Bears

Bears QB Mitch Tribusky explained that Matt Nagy’s offensive scheme is “more complex, but easier” to execute than the system the team ran last year.

“It’s more complex, but it’s easier [to execute], as opposed to simpler but more difficult,” Trubisky said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. “That’s how I would describe it last year. Last year, there were probably less words, but they didn’t necessarily fit together. Or it was just more difficult to process. This year, it’s more complex but it’s easier to execute and memorize and remember because everything builds on something. You start with a base concept, and it gets more and more complicated.”

Packers

Packers WR Randall Cobb confirmed he will take part in training camp, despite sporting a walking boot this summer. Cobb added that he is not sure if there will be any restrictions until he speaks to the team’s training staff. (Chris Barriere)

  • Stu Courtney of USA Today writes that there will be an “intense” battle for the Packers’ lead running back role in training camp.
  • Courtney considers that RBs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are “roster locks” with Ty Montgomery and FB Aaron Ripkowski being “good bets” to make the 53-man roster.
  • Courtney thinks Jones could take over as the team’s starting running back at some point this year once he’s done serving his suspension. Courtney adds that Aaron Rodgers has supported Jones, saying: “Absolutely zero worries about him back there.”
  • As for players who figure to be on the roster bubble this summer, Courtney lists RB Devante Mays and FB Joe Kerridge with FB Joel Bouragnon being a “long shot.”

Saints

New Saints WR Cameron Meredith, who is still recovering from an ACL and partial MCL tear, says his knee is almost close to 100 percent health.

On a scale of 1 to 10, it’s almost a 10…I haven’t had a setback along the recovery process,” Meredith said, via NewOrleansSaints.com. “I’m gaining strength day by day, month by month. I’m excited to see how soon I can get back…But the main objective for me is to do as much as I can with the trainers to get ready for the season. My goal is to try and get back to training camp. As long as there aren’t any setbacks or anything like that, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
