NFC Notes: Buccaneers, Cowboys, Giants

Buccaneers

Buccaneers HC Dirk Koetter said they’re hoping LT Donovan Smith can return from a knee sprain and suit up for Week 1’s game.

“Donovan takes a lot of pride,” Koetter said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “He’s never missed a start in his time here. If anybody can make it, it’s him.

Cowboys

Cowboys G Zack Martin said RB Ezekiel Elliott has been performing well since the start of training camp and that Elliott is “ready for a big year.”

Zeke’s been on it since we started camp. I’m sure you guys have seen it, just the way he’s running, the way he’s approaching every day. Something just feels different. I think he’s ready for a big year,” via Jon Machota.

Giants

Jets’ recently signed QB Davis Webb, who was waived by the Giants, said his former team gave no reason for his release and that “many people” disagreed with his dismissal.

“I didn’t need a reason,” Webb said, via Brian Costello of the New York Post. “They made a decision. I didn’t agree with it. I don’t think many people did, especially my teammates. I’ve moved on and I wish them nothing but the best.

Webb added that he feels signing with the Jets was the best decision for him since they showed “a lot of interest” and he does not have to move.

I felt like this is the best decision for me,” Webb said. “They showed a lot of interest and I felt wanted. I’m excited to be here. There’s no doubt about that. I get to keep my house, too.”

  • Giants HC Pat Shurmur implied that Alex Tanney will be the team’s No. 2 quarterback this season: “I’m very fond of a veteran presence backing up Eli.” (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • According to Shurmur, TE Evan Engram has cleared the concussion protocol.
